Is it true that driving only a few minutes each day is bad for your car battery? (11 อ่าน)

I never thought I would say this but I actually learned something really useful from an argument I had with my brother in law last weekend. He came to visit and noticed my car had been struggling to start in the mornings and immediately said it was because I only drive short distances every day. I told him that made no sense because I drive the car every single day without skipping and in my mind that should be more than enough to keep everything working properly. He tried to explain something about charging cycles and alternators but honestly I tuned out pretty quickly because he has a habit of overcomplicating everything. But then my battery actually gave up completely two days later while I was at a petrol station which was both embarrassing and annoying and I figured maybe I should actually listen this time. I started reading properly about why short trips drain car battery health over time and it finally made sense in a way my brother in law never quite managed to explain. The basic idea is that every time you start your engine it pulls a decent chunk of power from the battery and the alternator is supposed to refill that charge while the engine is running but if your trip is only five or ten minutes long the alternator simply does not have enough time to restore what was used. So if you are doing this multiple times a day across many weeks your battery is basically always running slightly below where it should be and one day it just hits a point where it cannot start the car anymore. What made it worse in my case is the heat here in the UAE which puts extra strain on the battery on top of everything else. I also read that air conditioning usage during short trips makes the situation even harder because the system draws power right at the moment when the battery is already at its lowest after starting. The fix is apparently not complicated, just taking a longer drive once or twice a week gives the alternator proper time to do a full recharge. Wish someone had just told me this years ago in plain simple words.
